Hack My Trip - Review: Lorien Hotel & Spa, Old Town Alexandria

The Frequent Travelers University ended late, so I booked my return flight for the following day with plans to see a friend living in the area. My original hotel, the Hyatt Alexandria, is a fine property but oriented toward business travelers and surrounded by office towers. I decided to find something with a little more character, something that Kimpton tends to excel at.

Kimpton's Lorien Hotel & Spa in Old Town, a couple stops further south on the Metro, was actually $20 cheaper and earned me a second stay toward the three I need to unlock the six free nights I earn as a member of Kimpton's Inner Circle. (FYI: All three of Kimpton's hotels in Alexandria make the top five list on Trip Advisor. It's ratings aren't perfect, but they are often more right than wrong.)

Check-in was a breeze, and I was upgraded from a standard room with one queen bed to a Lorien Suite, with a separate living room and a giant bathroom. There are several of these suites throughout the hotel, so I think the odds of an upgrade for Inner Circle members is quite good.

Let's start with the bedroom, my favorite room in the suite. The lamplight in the evening was warm and the natural light in the morning was more than sufficient. I liked the light blue walls, white furnishings, and comfortable easy chair. It even had a soft, woven blanket if I had wanted to curl up with a book.

Venetian blinds on the windows were high quality and more tasteful than drapes. Blackout drapes were still provided if, like me, you are sensitive to any light when trying to sleep, though an ottoman right below the window made them difficult to close.

The bathroom really drove home the contemporary design of the hotel, which attempted to add a modern edge to the comfortable, plush style like I saw in my bedroom. There was a significant amount of marble with a concrete countertop. Megan would have loved that countertop. I appreciated that even though it was one big room, it was very effectively partitioned to create separate areas for the toilet, sink, shower, and claw foot tub. Nothing was squeezed together.

Enough space between the shower and tub, as well as a lip running down the middle of the room, meant water from the open shower did not create a mess everywhere else. Amenities were provided by C.O. Bigelow, which I recall from my stay at the Andaz Wall Street. They are nice, but the scent is not for me.

Yes, I did take a soak in the tub. It was fairly spacious for a large guy like me. Most hotel tubs are far too small. But it took forever to fill! A low-flow faucet makes sense for showers and sinks — you just need to get wet. But a tub is not about saving water and should have a more robust delivery system.

Despite the tub, my only real complaint about the suite was that the living room was severely under-lit. I understand the bedroom and bathroom are the focus of many suites, but living rooms are often overlooked. That extra space is wasted if I find myself preferring to lounge on the bed where the surroundings are nicer. Rather than the size of the room, how it's laid out and furnished matter more when creating a comfortable stay.

It may not look so blue in this photo, but the image is more grainy than usual — a good indicator when my iPhone is suffering from low light.

For example, my particular living room did not have any windows. This would not normally be a problem by itself. But the only lighting were a few fluorescent lamps emitting very cool light. This did not work well with the already blue-tinted walls. It was like being inside a dark ice cube, albeit one with very comfortable furniture. Switch out the bulbs for halogens and I think it would be just fine.

Besides a couch, chair, and some nice flowers, there was also a desk and not just Internet access but an actual computer. But first, I had to wade through all the food they left for my welcome amenity. (I was offered a free glass of wine at check in, too, even though I'd missed the usual manager's wine reception.) I continue to get far more food than I need for just myself during a one-night stay and felt a little guilty leaving half of it uneaten. However, my next stay will be three nights in Miami with Megan. I think we'll finally be able to make good use of that particular benefit.

As a "hotel and spa" the Lorien is a bit different from other Kimptons. For example, there are no animal print bathrobes, just standard white ones. I did not utilize the spa services on my short stay, but the amenities on the ground floor seemed more welcoming than I have seen elsewhere. There was an inner courtyard with tables and chairs, a small "library" style sitting area off the lobby, and even an outdoor fire pit. I went out there for about an hour to work on the blog, and it was still a little chilly. In retrospect I should have brought that blanket from my room.

I have heard that Brabo, a restaurant attached to the Lorien, is one of the best in Old Town. My friend and I did not eat there since we were looking for something more casual. Instead, we ate at the Brabo Tasting Room next door, which does not take reservations. The food was fantastic: I had a beer and one of the best meatball sandwiches ever.

Despite dozens of trips to Washington, DC, and even a three-month internship, I had never been to Old Town Alexandria before and was excited about the opportunity. Sadly, it rained most of Monday. I still took a quick walk to the waterfront and stopped in a coffee shop for breakfast. This small town probably wouldn't hold my attention for more than a day, but it could still make for a nice base when visiting the city if you were willing to tolerate the extra commute.

To explore the rest, I'll have to come back with Megan some time and get a better look. It was charming to see an example of early American colonialism without all the monuments and office towers I've seen in places like Washington, New York, Boston, or Philadelphia. We don't get a whole lot of that out West, where "old" things were built in the 1970s, not the 1770s!

Dallas : The Hotel Zaza in Dallas Gets Serious About Their Tech Offerings

Often times, when we plead our case for free hotel WiFi, we hear that setting up a network or upgrading an existing network is an expensive investment for hotels and in order to recoup the costs, they need to charge guests to use the WiFi.

Now, every hotel is different but there are plenty of hotels out there that have been updating their networks to provide faster speeds and more bandwidth to guests and they still aren't charging for WiFi.

For example, The Hotel ZaZa in Dallas which recently added a new fiber data network throughout the hotel. Hotel president, Benji Homsey, explained the reason for the network upgrade saying:

We designed this network with special attention to the increased presence of Apple iPad, iPhone and Google/Android users in conjunction with the typical laptop usage. We want every Hotel ZaZa guest to have the best, from coverage and access points to best of breed fiber data network to the newly installed bedside power docks in every room.

The ZaZa brand, which just turned 10 this year, has another hotel in Houton and plans to open a third in Austin. All with free WiFi too.

Now about those bedside power docks, check them out below. We're in love. The hotel has also put in smartphone docks into the suites which allow guests to power up any type of smartphone.

Except you've been following the blog for decades, you might not recognise that I spent four years in Tulsa, Oklahoma, coming from 1996 to 2000. If the most recognized place an American Flight companies employee (current, or former in my case) is probably going to cycle through at a few point is Dallas/Fort Worthy of, the second most likely is required to be Tulsa. Regularly Flying - A Quick Evaluate the Refreshed ‘ Denver West’ United Club.

Like many people who live in small towns, Green is something of a jack-of-all-trades. He manages the Weed Store, which sells weed-related T-shirts, hats, signs and other souvenirs, but is also an ordained minister and was elected to the Weed city council in December. Green grew up in Weed and moved back to town a few years ago to care for his mom. He said that the town's road signs get stolen all the time because everyone wants a sign that says Weed.

There used to be a sign just outside town directing motorists to turn one way for the College of the Siskiyous and another for downtown Weed. But the allure of stealing a sign with the words "College" and "Weed" with arrows pointing in opposite directions was too strong and so they eventually ditched the sign and replaced it with the one you see above. You can, however, buy a postcard of the old sign at Green's shop.

There isn't a lot to see in downtown Weed, and in truth, I've seen more prosperous looking places, but the town is dramatically situated right near Mt. Shasta, a 14,000-foot peak in the Cascade Range. Even if Weed isn't the hippie haven I thought it might be, the town's merchants seem to have no qualms with capitalizing on the town's name. I saw "Enjoy Weed" T-shirts with the Coca-Cola logo, "I'm High on Weed" hats and other Weed-related souvenirs for sale all over town, including at one of the town's motels and at a gas station.

He said that not only is marijuana illegal, the town also has a law preventing any medicinal marijuana dispensaries from opening inside the city limits. After I left Weed, I looked up the town's election results and it turns out that Mitt Romney carried Siskiyou County, where Weed sits, to the tune of 56 percent. I didn't stick around in Weed long enough to understand the town's political dynamics but even in a brief little foray off the highway, I learned that Weed is full of surprises.

Lisbon: Even Better the Second Time

There are some places you never leave. You may not be there physically, but a piece of you stays behind forever to be with the place that stole so much of your heart. It lives there, reliving those initial memories and waiting for new ones to be made.

Last year, I visited Lisbon for the first time and though the visit was short, thoughts of it never left me. I fell madly in love and the city claimed a hold on me that I could never shake.

Last week, I returned to the city and it was as though I never left. Lisbon and I just fit. I walked new streets with that feeling I had been there before. I navigated the subway with ease. I felt at home in unknown restaurants. I sat around sharing jokes with Portuguese shop owners though neither understood each other's native tongue.

Mostly, I wandered the city dumbstruck as I marveled at just how crazy beautiful the city is – filled with beautifully tiled houses with red roofs and winding cobblestone streets that snake between multi-story homes draped with Portuguese flags and hanging laundry.

I worry a lot about going back to cities I fall in love with the first time around. What if I am just chasing ghosts? What if it won't be the same? What if I go back and hate it? Will I just compare the present to the past?

So, I touched down in Lisbon with a mix of excitement and trepidation, but as I stepped out onto the streets, I knew in my bones that we are soul mates. And when you are just meant to be with someone, all the change in the world doesn't matter.

On this visit, I relaxed at the nearby beach in the town of Cascais, where my ghost-like appearance become a bit more human-like after some time in the sun. I dined on fabulous fish at Santa Rita, a delicious and cheap (21 Euros for fish, a liter of wine, bread, and seafood rice) restaurant located downtown. I ticked off touristy sites like the city history museum and the castle. I stayed out so late in the Barrio Alto (an area known for wild nightlife) that I slept most of the next day away. (I still mostly blame the jetlag.)

There are moments when you travel where the stars seem to align and you think, as you sip wine from a cafe while watching neighborhood kids play soccer in the street and grandmothers hang the laundry from the windows, that somehow you got lucky enough for a destination to reveal itself to you in all its glory and that life couldn't get better.

Lisbon is filled with wonderful architecture, history, charisma, nightlife, people, and such incredible budget value that I can't help but daydream of renting a quiet little apartment on one of those cobblestoned streets.

Point Me on the Plane - 2013 List of Best Airlines for Prize Redemptions – Delta and US end of it.

IdeaWorks has as just stated released their annual Switchfly Reward Seat Availability rankings and Delta is just as before at the very bottom for the list, though this year these are joined by US Airways within a two-way tie. As per the blog post:

Air Berlin, Southwest, and Virgin Australia put into the top 6 with the 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 editions for the reward survey. For 2013 Air Berlin, GOL, and Southwest share first place with outstanding 100% scores, with every flight queried inside survey providing reward car seats. The list of companies was expanded to 25 for 2013 with the addition of Air Asia, Air China and taiwan, and AviancaTaca. The most significant year-over-year improvement were authorized by global players Environment France/KLM (up 22. 2 points) and Emirates Aircraft (up 12. 1 points). AirTran Airways (a product of Southwest) continued upward movement using a 7. 9 point increase and a nearly 50 point boost since 2011. Comparing total average result for the same 22 airlines within the 2012 and 2013 surveys reveals a half point drop designed for 2013. Thus, overall reward availability is essentially unchanged for the international airline industry. Continuing go on year's theme, survey findings indicate recurrent fliers are better served from the reward programs offered simply by value-oriented airlines. The average among the seven value- oriented airlines inside the survey was 96% that is definitely up from the 2012 reaction 93. 5%. The other more traditional carriers inside the survey group registered 61. 5% which is slightly below what the 2012 average of 62. 9%.

In terms of when to find the best availability, the survey does confirm what the majority of us already know. Legacy carriers release more award seats being the travel date gets closer and last minute travelers may have a more expensive chance of snagging their ideal award once they can wait until several days or weeks before reduction.

Now, as Gary likes to rightly point out each year, the results are thoroughly flawed! They do NOT consider the value of each particular person award (a short hop on Southwest surely can't be when compared to an international trip on AA) or the price tag on acquiring miles in every different program. They are also only reviewing online availability, which for a insurance company like US means that they have a lower score as compared to United, though they ever have identical award space. With all that said, for their very own metal awards, Delta probably truly does belong at the very bottom (even-though I've had some terrific recent luck with poor level awards). Unfortunately for the general public (but good for us), the survey will as just stated be reported on the nightly newscasts plus the advice given is to focus on accumulating miles with the lost cost carriers… I'll get United at 80% and additionally AA at 48. 6% any sort of day over JetBlue in 88. 6%.

Shanghai: Shangri-La Debuts 2nd Shanghai Hotel and Setbacks London

At the beginning of the year we were hoping that after seemingly endless expectancy, end of June would be the time to finally whiz up to the levels of Shangri-La at the Shard in London. Latest term but is that weall all have to hold our breath until following the summer before that could happen, with opening of the hotel forced back again to September. While we continue to wait, the party is providing something to wrap people over though: the Jing An Shangri-La Puxi, its second hotel in Shanghai, as a result of arrive on June 29 in the cit's west end. I make no apologies for appreciating the intellectual. I travel because I grew up reading histories, from Herodotus on down. When I am driving through Tunisia and see a road sign for Jugurtha's Table, my heart skips a beat.

In my weekly Chai Digest column I highlight articles that I find particularly useful or thought-provoking. To my regret, I find the more I do online, the less I read books, and I am determined to change that. I am creating Chai Book Club to share books of interest to the informed traveler and citizen. Each week I will highlight a book or topic, and give away a book to a reader. I welcome suggestions that will help me and readers expand our horizons on the subject of the week.

I am in China this week but my mind has wandered over to Korea. I am reading The Koreans by British journalist Michael Breen. His perspective is nuanced and refreshingly direct, American readers conditioned in political correctness will be shocked. I came across this on the superlative China Law Blog.

I am pairing it with Wayfarer: New Fiction by Korean Women, edited and translated by Bruce and Ju-Chan Fulton. I read this in college and still remember Pak Wan-so's "Identical Apartments," with the drunk husband who stumbles back to the wrong home unaware. This is out of print but used copies are readily available.

Hack My Trip - From the Computer to the Host’s House: A Guide to Airbnb

Thanks to Angie from NerdWallet for today's post expanding on how to use Airbnb to book apartments, homes, or just an extra room as an alternative to traditional hotel stays. Eric surveyed Airbnb and similar services like Couchsurfing and VRBO last week, but Angie volunteered to go into more detail on this particular option.

Airbnb — the popular short-term travel site — has been in the press recently for their over-the-top invitations to a Gatsby themed party in the Hamptons. In some ways Airbnb represents the East Egg-West Egg phenomenon; it allows you to see a different side to a city with a dose of charm and even grit that a traditional hotel could not encapsulate. To ensure you have the most fulfilling and courteous of experiences, here are some suggestions for when to use Airbnb on the host and guest side, and what to do when you get there.

With transportation costs rising, a two-week-long jaunt to Bali may be out of the question but a week-long session in Maine may be equally out of reach when considering hotel costs. Consider using Airbnb to minimize on costs while bringing a fresh perspective to a place you may have gone a hundred times. The Carmel highlands are experienced much differently while staying in a yurt than a hotel room. These experiences definitely will not hurt your wallet or your soul. Although staying at an Airbnb rental when you have your own place in the city sounds a bit ridiculous, a change of neighborhood and an avant-garde lodging style in a cool warehouse or artists' colony can be inspirational way to recharge for a short weekend without taking any vacation days.

When visiting an unfamiliar place where you are less familiar with neighborhoods and surroundings, make sure to do a little bit more background research before settling down on a listing. Who knows, you may have unwittingly chosen the apartment in Paris' red light district, which may have worked in your mid-20s but the loft next to the flashing lights of the Moulin Rouge may disturb your three-year-old's sleep these days. The advantage of Airbnb is that it offers comparable rates with amenities that many hotels lack like access to a full kitchen with refrigerator, allowing you to experience local cuisine firsthand while cutting down on living costs during your stay.

The decision to start hosting your own place on Airbnb should not be taken lightly. First, decide whether or not you have a space that could feasibly be rented out. Preferable accommodations include an entire apartment, a room in an apartment with bathroom, a loft, or any sort of independent dwelling with running water (the running water part is negotiable depending on the type of guest you're targeting). Next, think about whether you want to put in the work to host. Coordinating guest arrival times and keeping your place tidy and guest ready may sounds like a relatively simple task but still require a significant time commitment.

Finally, tease out whether you can legally do so. There have been a number of horror stories of evictions, mounting legal fees, and sanctions against owner who have rented their places out in buildings that have stipulations against short-term rentals. Save yourself a couple of tens of thousands in legal fees and make sure it's all gravy before filling out that rental listing.

The company has taken a lot of heat in recent months with reports of unruly tenants and renters alike arising in the media. To step-up consumer confidence, Airbnb has implemented an official ID-based verification process for users looking to rent out their place. 25% of U.S users will now be required to go through the procedure of inputting an official government ID, social security number, and verification of prior listings.

Take advantage of this newly implemented system to assure guests of your existence and authenticity. In all seriousness, it is a huge selling point and a great place to build in some host-hostee trust, and you get a cool little badge to put on your profile if you get verified. As a guest, make sure you do not put yourself in a vulnerable position, if you are traveling alone, choose a place appropriately and use the messaging feature and prior reviews to determine whether it's the place for you.

If you're looking to host your place on Airbnb, your rentals will be as popular as your reviews are. Clearly, it is impossible to control the never-satisfied guest, but putting in personal touches can really elevate their experience and your subsequent rating. Consider leaving a small welcome gift to guests, something local that can serve as memorabilia. A nice drink would be more than sufficient.

Where many hosts miss the mark is coordinating an arrival time. Make sure to use the message feature profusely for this part and get down a solid ETA, an airplane number to check for delays, and a way to reach them if you can. On the guest side, you don't want to be the reason your host has to tap into Airbnb's $1,000,000 guarantee against damages during stays. Be respectful of your host's digs, try and keep your area tidy, and give your host as much information about your stay and arrival/departure as you can to ensure a stay without delays.

Bike Share System Brings 10,000 Cycles To Nyc

London, Barcelona, Paris and Washington, DC are simply a few other towns that have presented cycle share plans. But in Nyc, the undertaking is on a huge scale; if the system releases, you will see 6,000 cycles at 330 stations in Manhattan and elements of Brooklyn. And that's just the beginning; there are plans to expand the bicycle share to 10,000 bicycles and 600 docking stations across Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. With figures like that, Associated Press reviews New York's bike share could be the largest of its kind in the united kingdom (in case you are interested, the photo above is part of the world's largest public bike share method is in Hangzhou, China, where there are an estimated 69,500 cycles and near 3,000 docking areas). So this summer, take advantage of the 300 miles of new cycle lanes the town has included previously five years, plus 200 more miles of channels and greenways that traverse parks. Ghetto IFE - All change at Birmingham New Street – Half time changeover

For those who travel in the UK by rail, there are a couple of stations that can you make you physically scream. One of those happens to be a local mainline station for me – Birmingham New Street.

Birmingham New Street is one of the busiest stations outside London, handling 31.2 million passengers and 5.1 million passengers changing trains. It's also a station that has a reputation of being a a big dark hole, where anything can have the life sucked out of it (as those of you who read my trip reports will know I call the place Mordor Hauptbahnhof… with good reason).

In the past couple of years however, the station has been going through a major refit and rebuild, and the first visible results will be felt from today, with what Network Rail is calling "The Half Time Changeover"

As a result, the three current entrances will be closing at the end of service on the 27th April, with 3 new entrances opening on 28th April.

Passengers who wish to connect to the bus network will have to allow 5-10 minutes extra to connect to the new entrances . Similarly those who are connecting between Birmingham Moor Street and Birmingham New street should allow extra time for your connections.

Those wishing to connect with Midland Metro at Birmingham Snow Hill will have pretty much the same connection as now providing you use the Stephenson Street exit

For those who are accessing the new street complex by car, the current carpark/Dropoff area off Smallbrook Queensway will close, with a pickup/Dropoff area opening at Hill Street. If you need to catch a taxi, you'll need to head to the Stephenson Street entrance/exit.

The refit is going well, and whilst it is still a concrete building site, it is an improvement over the old and increasingly cramp station, with concrete and lots of lights. Of course there is a lot of work to go… but it's a start.

Whilst the refit will be focusing on the station itself, it will not add extra rail lines in and out of new street (which can cause significant capacity issues as 2 pair of lines have only double tracks leading out of it, whilst lines heading out towards Gas Street basin are quad tracked).

View From The Wing - Austin Food & Culture — and What it Taught Me About Barbecue and… Thai Food

I was in Austin recently, it's one of my favorite cities, both for classic Texas and for much more modern culture. One of the things I did over the weekend earlier in the month is picked up tickets for 'Master Pancake,' a live Mystery Science Theatre 3000 style performance in a theatre/draft house. So you get something to drink, you can pay extra for comfortable chairs (a very modest upcharge), and watch some cutting-edge comedy. In this case, one of the original MST3K folks joined Austin regulars as they mocked Hunger Games. I may not have the most exciting Saturday nights, but it was a lot of fun.

I expected consistency — restaurants that have been around for 15 years or 50 years probably make the exact same thing day-in and day-out. And that's not what I found at all. When I did a tour of Texas barbecue back in September I loved Kreuz Market's pork ribs and also their brisket the best. But this time the brisket was overcooked, I was eating the fatty brisket but most of the moisture was cooked out of it. Their sausage was still good, their pork ribs good (although not quite as good as last time). And overall it was much better barbecue than I've ever had outside of Texas. But the place seemed a bit off.

Now I know to go early for barbecue, not only because the places will sell out but because you'll have the best meal immediately once the meat is done cooking. It was still on the early side. Kreuz Market just wasn't as good this time as last, they aren't as consistent as I expected.

On the other hand, Black's seems the model of consistency. I didn't think they were the best at any single item on my last visit, though possibly they were the best at beef ribs and came in a close second with their brisket. But everything was very, very good. And on this visit everything was still very, very good. I give the nod to Kreuz for pork ribs, still. But I'll take Black's overall for its execution both last visit and this one. It becomes even a clearer favorite for me.

I didn't eat nearly as much barbecue on this visit as last, the point of the trip wasn't barbecue it was just a positive side-benefit. I did, however, decide to have one last bit at the airport on the way out of town.

I love the Austin airport for the rental car lot directly across from the terminal, that they've just added TSA PreCheck earlier in the month, and that they have an Admiral's Club (one of the great benefits of accessing the lounge as a British Airways elite is that they give me drink chits — which I trade in at the bar for bottled water and don't need to purchase any for the flight).

Now the local barbecue tradition doesn't emphasize barbecue sauce. Some places offer it, Kreuz is specifically opposed (don't dare ask for any!). That's how I like it — the meat should be good enough, flavorful enough, that you wouldn't wind to hide the taste with sauce.

There's an outpost of Salt Lick Barbecue in the airport, and I decided to give it a shot. It's been recommended highly to me in the past, and I tried their Dallas airport spot and found it to be awful. But that one never came recommended, and I've been told Austin's is quite good.

And it was perfectly fine for a sandwich at the airport but it shouldn't be described as barbecue, at least in the same breath or same metropolitan region as places like Kreuz and Black's. Moreover, they lather it in sauce at Salt Lick. They need to. The brisket was dry, unflavorful.

There is no way to offer good barbecue airside at an airport. And I should know that. You aren't going to be able to cook over an open pit all night in order to recreate the flavor that's offered in the best real barbecue spots. There's a reason that barbecue hasn't been successfully franchised and offered as a consistent product across the country. It's too much of a labor-intensive bespoke craft, not given to regimented duplication, which means it doesn't work well in the airport environment. I didn't mind the sandwich, it would be perfectly fine if I were eating it at home in the DC area, but it wasn't Texas barbecue at all. Still, much better than the sandwich I got at DFW.

Meanwhile, if there's any preconceived knock I had against Austin it's that while you can get decent Mexican food, there's a lively food truck culture, and the barbecue of course is amazing, Asian options just aren't going to compare to what I'm used to in the Northern Virginia suburbs (especially Thai and Vietnamese). Still, I wanted to test that theory and I did find a Thai restaurant in the Sunset Valley suburb that's pretty good — that I would return to even in DC — though it didn't achieve the heights that my better local places do at home.

It can be a reasonable strategy for Thai to just search reviews on places like Yelp, as long as you discount any comments about Thai food that mentions the words "pad thai."

As I've commented about eating in Paris, where the spice of Asian food can be helpful in cutting through all of the butter and provide a gastronomic break from French food, I think it can do the same for barbecue. So I'm glad to find something that reasonably approximates good Thai — something I didn't expect to find in Austin because the best ethnic restaurants are going to usually come from clusters of similar-style restaurants which provide both competition and supports well-developed supply chains.

Crack My Vacation - Review: Kimpton Hotel Vintage Plaza, Portland

Last week-end was when I took the train bus down to Portland to own dinner with some readers my first stay at a Kimpton property. I wrote earlier about my status match with Kimpton, which will make me about 11 free nights this year. Six of those free nights are at new hotels, and new changes to the terms and conditions of position suits need at least three paid nights before they become available. The Hotel Vintage Plaza was really among the cheaper alternatives that night and is located between the Pearl Districtas bars and eateries, the Amtrak station, and the downtown shopping core. The surrounding resort, which can be flashier and has large glass photo windows, contrasts with the Hotel Vintage Plazaas historical building and always-missing doorman. No mention was made from an upgrade at check-in, but I arrived at my place on the ninth floor to see I'd a name on the door. Called bedrooms are always great.
